The Umbria region

Umbria is the center of Italy. It is bordered by Tuscany to the west and north and Lazio to the south. If you are a wine buff, Montalcino and its fine Brunellos are about 100km to the west. But Bevagna and Montefalco with their Sagratinos are just 10km away from Assisi.Assisi was the humble home of Saint Francis, founder of the Franciscan order and his contemporary Saint Claire. The Franciscan order went on to found San Francisco, Santa Clara and so on. Upon his death, the Vatican, in response to his great following decided to honor him by building a huge Basilica. Some protested by arguing that Francesco was more on the modest side and the argument was settled by building a lower church below the bigger basilica.
Assisi (Monte Subasio) was also the fictional home of Milo Giacomo Rambaldi (Nostravinci) of the hit television series Alias starring Jennifer Garner.

Assisi Area
The Pope was in Assisi on June 17 this year. The annual Mille Miglia with it's 375 vintage and expensive automobiles passed through Assisi on May 18, 2007. The Calendimaggio is usually held in early May where the whole town dresses up in medieval gowns and reenact the power struggle between the Sopras (the Haves) and the Sottos (the Have Nots).Throughout the summer there are Sagre held in all neighboring towns. These consist of Maria, Onion in Canara and so on. Hang out and mingle with the locals. There is live music and best of all you get to watch the Italians of all ages do the Italian Hustle.

How to get there

Assisi is in the geographical middle of Italy. Whether by train or car, it takes about 2 hours from Rome or 2 hours from Florence. Several trains each day take you to Assisi Train station located about 4 km down the hill in Santa Maria. From the station, you can buy a bus ticket at the bar and take a bus (there is only one and it leaves every 20 minutes) up the hill and get off across from the API gas station. Once off the bus, you turn around and walk about 200 mt past the Banca Dell Umbria, Agip gas station, and Sidis grocery store until you take the first left into Via San Benedetto. Follow Via San Benedetto 700 mt ( the first 150 mt are steep) until you see another fork at which you will see Casa di Subasio (the nicest stone towers on the street) on the left.If you drive, go up the hill towards Porta Nuova and make a right at the roundabout when you see Banca Dell'Umbria. After 100mts, take the first left onto Via San Benedetto 700 mt until you see another fork at which you will see Casa di Subasio (the nicest stone towers on the street) on the left. There is free parking directly across the street as well as off street parking.
Your arrival at Casa di Subasio will be made as stress free as possible and It is not a problem for me to pick you up at the train station, the local McDonald's (about 100m from the train station), or at the Sidis Supermercado where you can pick up a few grocery items.
If you are flying in, please note that Ryanair flies in from Stanstead. I can pick you up.
